The mission of the CardLinx Europe Council is to create a technical forum for collaboration among European based card issuers, processors, retailers, publishers, card-linked technology providers and merchants to promote the growth of card-linking and online to offline commerce. The Council will focus on discussing current shared technical challenges and design technical solutions. The Council seeks to implement global standards as well as standards required for specific European countries.

Leaders from companies including Plebicom, Surprise, Collinson Group, Cartes Bancaires, Rakuten, 24S, Harvey Nichols, Travelsify, and Fidel were in attendance.

The Objective

The objective for the May Europe Council meeting was to enable CardLinx members to find solutions for using CLO online in e-commerce including on-boarding merchants and merchant IDs.

Meeting Summary

  • Welcome: Silvio Tavares, President and CEO of the CardLinx Association, kicked off the meeting with an update on COVID19 in Europe.
  • Cartes-Bancaires: Ludovic Francesconi and Romain Meggle of Cartes-Bancaires gave their feedback on the last Europe Council Meeting held in March, as well as an overview of the new Cartes-Bancaires initiative.
  • Key European Commerce Trends: Silvio then spoke on moving CLO to online and e-commerce, as well as key European commerce trends including surges in e-commerce spending, bankruptcies accelerating for travel and specialty retail industries, and surges in CLO usage.
  • Key Challenges for E-Commerce CLO: Andre Elias, CTO of Fidel, and Silvio also discussed key challenges for e-commerce CLO including merchant IDs for e-commerce merchants and linking in store merchant IDs to online merchant.

Next Steps

The Europe Council’s next step is to create a directory for European networks and European payment processors for merchants that need to look up or create a new merchant ID.
