Governance of AI in Commerce: What Leaders and Teams Should Know

May 19, 2026
11am - 12pm ET
Via Zoom

Artificial intelligence is actively reshaping online commerce, and there are many early efforts afoot to establish governing principles for AI’s role in online commerce. A current example is the Universal Commerce Protocol, and other significant efforts are afoot, too.

Building on the DCA-CardLinx March Roundtable, this webinar will

  • Review currently proposed protocols like UCP and others
  • Discuss where they do and don’t apply
  • Assess the spaces where principles or protocols may be needed

In this discussion, Dan will provide a review of the governance proposals to date, and Tim will give a first-hand account of their likely impact on discovery, identity, payments, loyalty, and data infrastructure.

Speakers

Dan Currell is a consultant, writer, and former CEO of DCA-CardLinx. He contributes to the New York Times and other national publications and advises clients on matters at the intersection of digital commerce and law.

Tim DeSoto is the founder of Goodlife, an AI-first Intelligent Shopping Companion, and a former DCA-CardLinx board member. Before founding Goodlife, Tim held senior innovation roles at Dow Jones, Wall Street Journal Interactive, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart.

Who It’s For

This session is designed for leaders and teams who want to get up to speed quickly on the fast-changing governance (principles and protocols) of AI and commerce, and who want to be part of the conversation about where AI governance is headed.

Core Themes

  • The goal is a healthy ecosystem for consumers and every type of provider
  • We are early enough to make a big difference —  “clay is still soft”
  • Things are moving fast, so it’s an important conversation —  “clay is hardening fast”
  • Doing nothing is not neutral; it increases risk for consumers, firms, and the ecosystem as a whole

  • What existing standards may be relevant to AI in commerce?
  • What standards haven’t worked?
  • What protocols are under development? (e.g., UCP, or Universal Commerce Protocol)
  • What standards/protocols might be necessary to handle AI in other areas of commerce?
